Date: July 27th 2010

Good morning fellow planners,

Next Tuesday, August 3rd, the Bureau of Land Management is hosting a unique student opportunity – Salt Lake City will be hosting one of several America’s Great Outdoors listening sessions that are being hosted across the country. This youth-based listening session is targeted for participants between the ages of 16-25. This is a unique opportunity for students to express their ideas which will be presented to the Secretary of Interior during the session.

This is where you come in – we need your help in getting youth from across the state to attend this listening session! If you are involved with a youth group, university class, or know of students who may be interested, can you please forward this message to them? As this event is only one week away, we appreciate any assistance you can provide in getting the word out.

Please let interested students know they should follow the link below and sign up for the session. While the official deadline is Wednesday, July 28th, students are encouraged to email the contact address (americasgreatoutdoorsyouthslc@blm.gov) as soon as they can commit to attending. Please see below for information that should be provided.

If you have any questions regarding this session, please contact Cindy Ledbetter at (801) 977-4377 or americasgreatoutdoorsyouthslc@blm.gov.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,

Lindsay Ex

NOTICE OF A PUBLIC LISTENING SESSION ON THE PRESIDENT’S AMERICA’S GREAT

                            OUTDOORS INITIATIVE

America’s Great Outdoors Youth Listening Session

                               July 22, 2010

                            Salt Lake City, UT

“It’s a recognition, passed down from one generation to the next, that few  pursuits are more satisfying to the spirit than discovering the greatness

                          of America’s outdoors.”

-President Barack Obama, April 16, 2010 Dear Friends,

On April 16, 2010, President Obama established the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to develop a conservation and recreation agenda for the 21st century.  The President understands that efforts for protecting and restoring the lands and waters that we love and reconnecting people to the outdoors must be community driven.  For this reason, he has called upon senior government officials to host a series of public listening sessions in a range of locations across the country.

Young people play a critical role in shaping our country’s environmental future.  In his memorandum establishing the America’s Great Outdoors initiative, President Obama asked that, “special attention…be given to bringing young Americans into the conversation.”  We want to engage you in this conversation from the beginning, and ensure that your voices are heard in the end.

In early August, the leaders of the America’s Great Outdoors initiative are coming to Salt Lake City to hear from you.  Please join us for a public listening session at the Radisson Salt Lake City Downtown on Tuesday, August 3rd.

Who: Young people from the Utah area

What: A discussion on America’s Great Outdoors

When: Tuesday, August 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Radisson Salt Lake City Downtown, 215 West South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101

This event is hosted by the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Before the session, there will be the general America’s Great Outdoors Listening Session.  Youth are encouraged to attend the general listening session from 10:00-1:15 pm at the Radisson Salt Lake City Downtown.

                                    ***

To ensure that we have sufficient space for everyone, we encourage you to let us know by Wednesday, July 28 if you are able to attend one or both of these listening sessions.  You can do so by sending your name, email address, and telephone number via email to americasgreatoutdoorsyouthslc@blm.gov or via fax to (801) 539-4074.  We will contact you if we reach capacity.

If you have questions, please contact Cindy Ledbetter at (801) 977-4377 or americasgreatoutdoorsyouthslc@blm.gov.

Thank you for your support.  We hope to see you in Salt Lake City!
